Bulldog Baseball Hall of Famer Tom Goodwin Wins World Series with the Boston Red Sox

FRESNO -  Fresno State Baseball Hall of Famer Tom Goodwin won his first World Series as an assistant coach of the Boston Red Sox on Sunday night at Dodger Stadium. Goodwin just completed his first season as the Red Sox's first base coach after spending the previous six seasons as the first base coach for the New York Mets.

A Fresno native, Goodwin played three years for his hometown Bulldogs from 1987 to 1989 helping lead Fresno State to the 1988 College World Series where the 'Dogs tied for seventh finishing the season with a school-record 56 wins. The 'Dogs also made the 1989 NCAA Tournament in his final season at Fresno State as he was named a First-Team All-American leading the nation with 61 stolen bases and put together a school-record 29-game hitting streak helping the 'Dogs to 44 wins.

Goodwin wrapped up his career as the program's record holder in stolen bases with 164 and remains in the top 10 in school history in batting average (.350-10th), at-bats (821-6th), runs (207-T-2nd), hits (287-4th) and triples (13-T-3rd).

Goodwin went on to become a first round selection of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1989 putting together a 14–year MLB career with six different teams and was inducted into the Bulldog Baseball Hall of Fame in 1995. Goodwin's number one jersey is one of 11 retired jersey in Bulldog baseball history.

"Growing up in Fresno, never really rooting for the Dodgers, but being drafted by the Dodgers and being able to come back here and win a little something (the World Series) is very special," Goodwin said after the game.

As a Major League baseball player, Goodwin played in the 2003 World Series with the San Francisco Giants appearing in five of the series' seven games as the Angels defeated the Giants four games to three. Goodwin logged his lone career postseason stolen base in the series with a steal in a 4-3 game four win for the Giants that tied the series at two games apiece.
