Vera died at the age of 84 after a short illness. She was born Aug. 21, 1927 in Santa Clara, CA, to Antonio and Maria Avalos. Shortly after her birth, her family moved to Madera. At the age of 16, she went to work for DeWitt's Drug Store and a few years later, she started working for Rascos, which was later to become Newberry's. She spent more than 30 years working for the store.
She was a member of St. Joachim Catholic Church and enjoyed visiting friends and having lunch at the Pan-American Senior Center, where she worked as a volunteer. In 1956, Vera married Edward Patrick Kelly, who died in 1993. She was also preceded in death by her parents, brothers Alex, Joseph, Antonio, Manuel and Frank and sister Ruby. Vera is survived by daughter, Debbie Bittick and husband Paul of Atascadero, CA and granddaughter, Andrea Youpel and husband Derek of Newport Beach, CA. She also is survived by brother Fernando Avalos of Woodland, CA and sister Phyllis Velasquez of Madera and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff of Madera Community Hospital and Danish Care in Atascadero for their wonderful support over the past several weeks. Visitation will be on Sunday, April 22, 2012 from 2:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. with Recitation of the Rosary beginning at 6:00 P.M. at Jay Chapel in Madera, CA. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, April 23, 2012 at 9:00 A.M. at St. Joachim Catholic Church in Madera. Interment to follow at Calvary Cemetery in Madera. Remembrances may be sent to Peters Canyon Elementary School, Mrs. Youpel's Special Education Class, 26900 Peters Canyon Road, Tustin, CA 92782.
