FRESNO - Late Wednesday morning North East patrol officers from the Fresno Police Department  were dispatched to a call of an injured mounted member at the mounted unit training facility located at Dakota and Sierra Vista Avenues. The call indicated the mounted patrol officer fell off of his horse and that he was having chest pains  and possibly a broken rib. EMS responded to the location code 3 and transported be sworn member to the Clovis Community Hospital.

The injured Mounted Unit member, a sworn veteran of of the agency with over 30 years of law enforcement experience, was riding the police horse with another Department member in the southern training field of the facility just east of Sierra Vista Avenue. The members just pulled the horses out of their facility and were warming them up in the training field.

As the members got close to the fence line of Sierra Vista Avenue, a citizen located at a residence across from the training field on the west side of Sierra Vista Avenue, suddenly started a large wood chipper in the front yard of the residence. The sudden and loud sound of the chipper startled the member's horse causing the horse to quickly turn in tight circles, knocking the member off the horse and to the ground causing his injury.

After the accident, the horse was returned to the stable and the member was rushed to the hospital. The injured member is having x-rays done now for possible broken ribs.
