VISALIA - The Visalia Police Department has been awarded a new traffic safety grant for a year-long anti-DUI program aimed at preventing deaths and injuries on our roadways. The $123,000 grant awarded by the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to Visalia will aid in the city’s ongoing effort to improve traffic safety and the quality of life.
“The DUI enforcement grant has been very effective in combating impaired driving in the past, the Visalia Police Department plans to continue that enforcement within the city. The grant also allows for opportunities to increase awareness and educate the public to this problem,” said Sergeant Chris McLain of the Visalia Police Department.

SACRAMENTO - Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye addressed the effect of recent budget cuts on the public’s access to justice before a joint hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Senate Budget and Fiscal Review Committee, Subcommittee No. 5 on Corrections, Public Safety and the Judiciary.
“We in the judicial branch accept our responsibility to help address the state’s ongoing fiscal crisis,” said the chief justice. “But we also are mindful of our duty to ensure that 38 million Californians are assured their rights under our constitution, that businesses and residents are provided lawful means to settle disputes, and that those accused of crimes are prosecuted fairly and expeditiously,” she said.

MADERA – Madera County District Attorney Michael R. Keitz announced Monday that Lorenzo Ramos, age 52, of Mendota was convicted on April 13, 2011 of grand theft charges.
A jury in the Madera Superior Court convicted Ramos for stealing a farm trailer early in the morning of January 11, 2012, from an equipment yard on Avenue 6 in Madera County. A farm employee witnessed the theft and alerted the Sheriff’s Office, who apprehended Ramos and recovered the stolen property within minutes.

CLOVIS - Early Friday morning, Clovis Police received several calls of shots fired in the 200 block of Eighth Street. Officers arrived in moments to find two apparent homicide victims in two separate houses across the street from each other.
When officers were performing a safety check of the area, a man with a firearm confronted them. That’s when the officer involved shooting took place. The suspect was taken to Community Regional Medical Center where he died about 3 hours later. No Clovis Police officers were hurt in the incident.

CORCORAN – The Board of Parole Hearings (BPH) denied parole today to inmate Charles Manson, 77, at a parole suitability hearing at California State Prison-Corcoran in Kings County.
It was Manson’s 12th parole suitability hearing conducted by a BPH panel. He will be considered for another parole review in 15 years.
