REDISCOVER FIGS: THE ANCIENT FRUIT WITH MODERN APPEAL

MADERA -- The start of the 2023 California Fresh Fig season is just weeks away, but California fig farmers are excited about more than harvest this year. A newly published research review confirms what the California fig industry has been touting for years: figs are delicious and nutritious. The review also suggests there are even more potential benefits with recommendations for further research in the areas of gut health, cholesterol, and glucose control.

"Phytochemical Composition and Health Benefits of Figs (Fresh and Dried): A Review of Literature from 2000 to 2022" was published June 3, 2023, in Nutrients, an MDPI publication, and was conducted by researchers from the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, Center for Nutrition Research, Institute for Food Safety and Health at the Illinois Institute of Technology.

California's Largest Grower Leads Growing Coalition Against Unconstitutional Olive Oil Labeling Measure AB 535

SACRAMENTO -  A growing number of California olive oil farmers, millers, industry professionals, and retailers are raising their voices in opposition to California Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry's overly restrictive olive oil labeling legislation, AB 535. As it is currently written, AB 535 criminalizes the selling of olive oil with truthful and accurate brand names containing geographical terms and establishes a concerning precedent for regulating businesses with geographic names and trademarks in other food and agriculture industries.

The proposed bill would make selling products with geographical names or trademarks a misdemeanor and risk criminal penalties for retailers and store employees selling such products.
