Three McClatchy Newsrooms to Join News Co/Lab Initiative

SACRAMENTO - McClatchy announced today that three newsrooms will join an innovative initiative to strengthen news literacy, credibility and public trust. The Telegraph, in Macon, Georgia, and The Modesto Bee, in central valley California, will join The Kansas City Star as part of News Co/Lab, a collaborative project developed by Arizona State University's Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication and supported by the Facebook Journalism Project and the News Integrity Initiative.

The three local newsrooms will launch a variety of experiments to improve the public's ability to understand how news works, build public trust in reporting, increase transparency in how news is produced, improve community engagement with newsrooms and gather feedback. The Cronkite School will track the success of these steps and share best practices and models that work.


Plumbers Van & Handgun Recovered: Peckerwood in Custody

FRESNO - On Monday, October 30, 2017, Detectives from the Career Criminal Auto Theft Team (CCATT) located a 2001 Chevrolet van, belonging to a local plumbing company, in the driveway of a residence in the area of Hayes and Clinton. The van was a reported stolen vehicle out of Northeast Fresno. Detectives began surveillance.

During the surveillance, several subjects were seen in and around the stolen van. Detectives eventually approached the residence and detained multiple people. One male fled on foot and was apprehended after a foot pursuit with the assistance of the Fresno Police Department’s helicopter air crew.

Fresno Woman Wanted for Assault with a Deadly Weapon

FRESNO - The Fresno County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office is asking for the public’s help in locating a female wanted for Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Mayhem. A warrant has been issued for 29 year old Karen Valadez of Fresno. (Two pictures of her are shown)

On Saturday October 14, Deputies responded to the 3400 block of East Clinton for a report of a disturbance involving knives and a bat. Upon arriving at the location, everyone was gone from the scene. A short time later, a female with multiple stab wounds arrived at Community Regional Medical Center. Deputies determined that the two calls were related. The victim had several non-life threatening wounds.

Two Career Criminals Taken Off The Streets of Fresno

FRESNO - On Tuesday, October 24, 2017, Detectives from the Career Criminal Auto Theft Team (CCATT) of the Fresno Police Department located a 2008 GMC Canyon pickup driving in the area of West and Harvard. The GMC was a reported stolen vehicle out of Northeast Fresno. Detectives began following with the assistance of the Fresno Police Department’s helicopter air crew.

The stolen GMC eventually drove to the area of Terrace and West where the male driver exited and entered a residence. A female passenger then took over as driver and left the area. Detectives followed her to the area of Fruit and Shields where she was taken into custody. The male driver had fled out of the rear of the residence and was eventually found hiding in a nearby garbage can.

FoodLink of Tulare County to Hold Annual Food Day Event on October 28th

EXETER - Every October, Americans will attend thousands of events across the country to celebrate Food Day – an event that celebrates real food, and creates a movement towards improved food systems and policies.  FoodLink for Tulare County will be hosting their Annual Food Day Event on October 28, 2017, at 611 2nd St., Exeter, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. – a free community event.

Opening remarks by California State Assemblyman, Devon Mathis, will commence at 10 a.m., followed by cooking demonstrations at 10:30 a.m., 11:15 a.m., and noon. “A local chef will be demonstrating how to make soup, waffles, and gnocchi, using a wide variety of ingredients,” Nicole Celaya, Community Food Security and System Development Director, said.  “All the food and activities are free to the community.”
