Southwest Officers Locate And Arrest Armed Gunman

FRESNO - On Thursday, March 29, 2018, at approximately 2100 hours, Southwest Patrol Officers responded to the 2200 block of S Plumas regarding several subjects in the parking lot. One subject, described as a male wearing a red shirt and having a gold grill on his teeth, had brandished a firearm.

Upon arrival, Officers drove into the parking lot where three males who all attempted to walk away. One of the subjects, wearing a red shirt and having a gold grill on his teeth, was very argumentative and uncooperative with officers. This subject was detained and identified as 30 year old Fresno Resident Charles Garrett, who is an identified Strother Boy Criminal Street Gang member.


Diabetes.Program for School Nurses at VCH

MADERA  -  School nurses from across Central California converged on Valley Children’s Hospital to learn more about the latest improvements in managing students with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The daylong event, “Diabetes Management for the Pediatric Population,” provided school nurses an opportunity to interact with pediatric professionals who discussed subject matter ranging from insulin therapy, exercise and nutritional management.

Valley Children’s gets phone calls every day from school nurses who care for the Hospital’s  diabetic patients, said Denise McEowen, a registered nurse and certified diabetic educator at Valley Children’s. “They are like our partners in taking care of these kids,” she said.

California Correctional Institution Officials Investigating Riot

TEHACHAPI – On Sunday, March 25 at 1:33 p.m., about 65 inmates were involved in a riot in the Facility A yard at California Correctional Institution (CCI). No staff members were injured during the attack.

CCI staff responded immediately, utilizing force consisting of 40 mm less-than-lethal direct impact rounds and OC pepper grenades to gain control of the incident. In addition, three lethal weapon rounds were fired, with one of them hitting an inmate in the buttocks. He was transported to an outside hospital for treatment, with non-threatening injuries. Five other inmates were injured during the incident, and were also transported to outside hospitals. Their condition is unknown at this time.

FBI Provides Update on Travis Air Force Base Security Incident

SACRAMENTO  -  During a press conference at the Sacramento Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the FBI provided an update regarding a March 21, 2018 attempted security breach at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California.

A vehicle entered the base without authorization and a fire occurred in the vehicle. The driver died at the scene. The investigation is in the early stages. Travis Air Force Base first responders and local emergency officials responded to the incident, which took place at the main gate entrance.

Madera Man Accused of Attempted Homicide of Correctional Officer Under Investigation

CORCORAN – Two correctional officers are recovering from injuries sustained during an attack by an inmate Tuesday at Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison, Corcoran (SATF).

At 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 20, inmate Jose Moreno, 24, approached a correctional officer from behind and began striking him in the back of the head with a horseshoe. Staff immediately responded to the area to stop the attack. Moreno threw an additional two horseshoes at responding staff, striking another correctional officer in his face and arm. Staff used pepper spray to quell the attack.

Two Fresno PD Motor Officers Injured in Collision

FRESNO -  Two Fresno Police Motorcycle Officers were injured in a traffic collision Tuesday afternoon. Both officers were transported to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment and are listed in stable condition.

Motor Officers Brian Chadwick and Steven Craig were traveling northbound on Fresno Street approaching Lewis Avenue when a Nissan pick-up truck made an illegal left turn in front of the officers. The officers were unable to avoid the collision and struck the right side of the truck causing moderate damage to the truck and major damage to both motorcycles.

Fresno County District Attorney Announces $500,000 Settlement ith COSTCO and San Francisco Bay Gourmet Coffee Over Sales of Plastic Coffee Pods

FRESNO -  Fresno County District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp announced today that her office, along with 24 other District Attorney’s Offices in California, settled a consumer protection action against Costco Wholesale Corporation, Inc. and JBR, Inc., a coffee company headquartered in Roseville, California, which does business as San Francisco Bay Gourmet Coffee and the Rogers Family Company.

The settlement was based on allegations that the companies sold plastic coffee pods, labeled with untrue and misleading marketing claims, including statements related to biodegradability and compostability. A stipulated final judgment settling the matter, that had been filed in Alameda County, was issued by Alameda County Superior Court Judge Morris Jacobson.
