TEHACHAPI – On Sunday, March 25 at 1:33 p.m., about 65 inmates were involved in a riot in the Facility A yard at California Correctional Institution (CCI). No staff members were injured during the attack.
CCI staff responded immediately, utilizing force consisting of 40 mm less-than-lethal direct impact rounds and OC pepper grenades to gain control of the incident. In addition, three lethal weapon rounds were fired, with one of them hitting an inmate in the buttocks. He was transported to an outside hospital for treatment, with non-threatening injuries. Five other inmates were injured during the incident, and were also transported to outside hospitals. Their condition is unknown at this time.
The cause of the riot is unknown, and inmate movement has been limited in the prison to facilitate the investigation into this matter.
CCI opened in 1932 and houses approximately 3,900 minimum-, medium-, maximum- and high-security custody inmates. CCI offers academic classes and vocational programs and employs approximately 1,600 people.
