Steve Jack Zupanovich (92)

Steve Jack Zupanovich (Mr. “Z”) went peacefully home to Jesus, surrounded by his family, on May 17, 2023, at age 92. Steve was born to Jack and Maria Zupanovich in San Pedro, California, on December 22, 1930.

As a child, Steve loved spending time on the fishing boats, playing in the harbor, and fishing with his Dad and Barba Jack. However, from the time he played Senor Bandini in the 3rd grade, he had a keen interest in everything historical. In 1943 Steve, his sister Margaret and his parents moved to Kerman, where he graduated high school and spent most of his adult life. Shortly after high school, Steve enlisted in the Marine Corps and joined George Company in Korea from 1948 to 1952, where he earned two purple hearts and a bronze star for bravery. Steve was always modest and would often joke that he did what any of his buddies would do!

Steve married his dear wife, Katherine Ann Lucich, in 1955 and moved to Chico, where Steve graduated from Chico State to become a history teacher combining his interest in history with his true passion: teaching. As English author Joseph Addison once said, “What sculpture is to a block of marble, education is to a human soul.” Steve’s 33 years in the classroom shaped and inspired a generation of students who fondly remember the antics of Mr. “Z”. Throughout his long and fruitful career, he taught in Hamilton City, Kerman, and Madera, California, ending as “Teacher of the Year” at Madera High School in 1991. Steve then spent his golden years farming almonds and chasing gophers on the family property.

In addition to being a dedicated and inspirational educator, Steve was a lifelong learner, a Fulbright Scholar studying Balkan history in Croatia, a spirited Kerman Unified School Board member, and a devoted member of St. Patrick’s Church. Throughout his life, he had an unwavering faith in God, which he shared with those who surrounded him. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Katherine, Dana Lucka, Stephanie San Sebastian, Jim Beebe, their spouses, his grandchildren, and his great-granddaughter, plus numerous nieces, nephews, and godchildren. Steve joins his parents, Jack and Maria, in heaven.

Actress Sophia Loren also survives him.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider donating to St. Patrick’s Church (P.O. Box 375, Kerman, CA 93630) or a meaningful charity of your choice.
