Lillie Herschfelt

Lillie Herschfelt passed away on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at the age of 98. Lillie was a native of Miles, TX and a resident of Madera, CA for 74 years. She graduated from Ballinger High School class of 1931, entered into the Tarleton Jr. College in 1932 - 1933. She then went to University of Texas where she obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.

Lillie came to California from Texas by train with classmates Edith Miles and Sumi Otsuki. She attended UC San Francisco, 1941-1942 and received her Bachelor's Degree in Public Health Nursing. In 1943 Lillie attended UC Berkley and graduated in 1945 with her Master's Degree.


She married William Herschfelt and settled in Madera where she started working at the new County Hospital at Avenue 14 ½ and Road 28. She was a Registered Nurse working for the Health Department until she retired after 28 years.

After her retirement, Lillie and William traveled to Alaska, Hawaii, Gal Gray Canada, Nova Scotia Canada, Florida, and Texas. They summered in Creede, Colorado with her sister Viola and niece LaRea. Each summer while traveling Lillie and William would take one of the grandchildren, so all her grandchildren have memorable stories of their summer vacations.

Lillie is the last of ten children. She was preceded in death by her parents, nine siblings, her husband of 59 years, William Harlan Herschfelt, Jr., in 2002, and her son Michael Harlan Herschfelt in 2006.


She is survived by her son, Paul Herschfelt of Madera, her five grandchildren, Paul Herschfelt, Jr. of Phoenix, AZ, Trisha Herschfelt of Fresno, Lisa Herschfelt and Lori Filiau both of Santa Cruz, and Jennifer Mikita of Sonora. She also leaves behind, eight great grandchildren, Andrew Herschfelt, Megan Herschfelt, Nathan Herschfelt, Kaitlyn Barnard, Emily Barnard, Michael Ryan Herschfelt, Jacob Mikita and Lily Mikita.


Visitation will be held on: Sunday, April 10, 2011 from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Jay Chapel, Madera, CA

Graveside Service will be held on: Monday, April 11, 2011, 1:00 PM at Arbor Vitae Cemetery, Madera, CA
