Madera County Deputy Resting at Home Following Oakhurst Officer Involved Shooting

OAKHURST – A deputy with the Madera County Sheriff’s Department was transported to a local hospital following an officer-involved shooting on Highway 41 in the area of Oakhurst. The shooting also sent a 32-yar-old male suspect to a Fresno hospital by way of a life-flight helicopter.

Around 10 am Thursday MCSO Dispatchers notified law enforcement of a person acting erratically at a bus stop on Highway 41. According to Madera County Undersheriff Tyson Pouge, the suspect was reported to be in the middle of the road causing a disturbance.

The first deputy on the scene was an unidentified plain-clothes detective from Madera County SO. At some point during the interaction, the deputy discharged his weapon. Both the deputy and the suspect were transported to a local hospital. The deputy's injuries are not life-threatening and according to Pouge the officer has been released from the hospital and is resting at home.

The suspect is a Mariposa resident with an extensive criminal history in that county who has at least one arrest in each of the two counties for obstructing or delaying a peace officer.

Deputies taped off the area around the bus stop near Deli Delicious and closed Highway 41 in both directions between State Route 49 and Road 426 in Oakhurst due to police activity. The highway has since been reopened to traffic.

The Madera Police Department will be the primary investigative agency for the officer-involved shooting with the assistance of the California Highway Patrol. As is county policy, the deputy involved has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Madera County Sheriff's officials did not release the name of the suspect or officer. BVN will be updating this story as more information becomes available.
