Eugene N. “Pete” Harlow (87)

Eugene N. “Pete” Harlow, 87, a long time Raymond resident, passed away Wednesday, April 11, in Fresno, surrounded by his children, grandchildren, sisters and nephews. A native of the Usona area of Mariposa, Pete was born on October 12, 1930 to Maude Leonard Harlow and Ed Harlow at the family home ranch on Usona Road.

His maternal grandfather was Archibald Campbell Leonard, a noted guide and one of the first rangers of Yosemite National Park. Leonard accompanied President Teddy Roosevelt and John Muir on their 1903 tour of Yosemite. His father Ed Harlow, was one of the first Native-Americans in the state of California to be elected to a county seat when he was elected to the Mariposa County Board of Supervisors in 1936.

As a youth, Pete attended Chowchilla School and then Mariposa County High School before his family relocated to Raymond in 1946.
A US Army Veteran, Pete served in Korea from 1952 to 1954 before being honorably discharged.

Pete was a timber faller for over 40 years before retiring in 1992. In addition to logging, he ran cattle in the Usona and Green Mountain areas of Mariposa County. For the last 25 years he has served as a US Postal Department mail contractor delivering mail in both Madera and Mariposa counties. The mail contract has been in the Harlow family since 1946.
In addition to his parents, Pete was proceeded in death by his wife Brenda Harlow and his son Daniel Harlow as well as two brothers and two sisters.
Mr. Harlow is survived by his son, Ray Harlow of Raymond and two daughters, Laurie Alberta (her husband Dave) of Coarsegold and Patty Alberta( her husband Mike) of Raymond; his grandsons Brandon Alberta, Blaine Alberta(wife Genevieve), Bryan Alberta(wife Jenn), Seth Alberta and Logan Alberta: granddaughters Cameron Harlow, Taylor Alberta Allsup(husband Taylor) and Jessica Alberta. Great grandchildren Mia Alberta, Bodie Alberta, Ransom Alberta and September Alberta. Mr Harlow is also survived by his sisters Virginia Parrott and Mary Rose of Raymond and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 20, 2018 at 2 p.m. at Jay Chapel, 1121 Roberts Avenue Madera California. A potluck reception will be held following services at the Hills Pride Inn in Raymond(Knowles)
