FRESNO - Third-year sophomore wide receiver Davante Adams of the Fresno State football team has informed head coach Tim DeRuyter that he will forgo his two remaining seasons of eligibility and enter the NFL Draft.
"I felt that this was a good time for me to take the next step," said Adams, a two-time All-American and two-time All-Mountain West first-team selection. "I felt that I have done all that I can do and I felt like it was a good move to make going out on a good note because you never know returning and then maybe your stock can be dropped."
In his two seasons playing for the Bulldogs, Adams rewrote the Fresno State record book and leaves school owning 10 receiving records to his name. He caught 233 passes for 3,031 yards and 38 touchdowns in 26 games at Fresno State.
"As head coach, I want to support all of our players by providing them with all of the pertinent information so that they can make the right choice for themselves and their family," DeRuyter said. "While we are disappointed that Davante will be leaving early, we understand his reasons, support his decision, and wish him the very best as he embarks on his goal of becoming an impact player in the National Football League."
He leaves school as the nation's active career leader in receptions per game (9.0), receiving yards per game (116.5) and touchdown catches.
"It's been a lot of fun and I've experienced a coach change and I'm really proud of coach DeRuyter and his staff and excited that they got to come in and coach me," Adams said of his time at Fresno State. "It's been a real fun time being around all the guys that I met and all the life-long friendships that I've developed.
"I learned a lot here and I wouldn't choose any other school over Fresno State."
Adams came to Fresno State in 2011 out of Palo Alto (Calif.) High School and redshirted as a true freshman.
In 2012 as a redshirt freshman, Adams caught 102 passes for 1,312 yards and 14 touchdowns. He went on to be named the Mountain West Freshman of the Year and an All-American that season when he caught 32 more passes, had 458 more receiving yards and five more touchdowns than any other player in the conference that season.
Adams not only matched, but increased his production as a sophomore this season for the Bulldogs. He led the nation in receptions per game (10.1), total receptions (131) and touchdown catches (24), which is the fourth-most in FBS history. Additionally he was second in receiving yardage with 1,718 that set a new school record. His 131 receptions in 2013 also set a new Fresno State and Mountain West record for the most in a season.
He was a first-team All-Mountain West selection for the second-consecutive year and was named to eight different All-America teams in 2013, including a second-team selection from the Walter Camp Football Foundation and a first-team selection by SBNation.com.
